Curious whether Patrick Muldoon is really returning to Days of Our Lives as Austin Reed? A recent behind-the-scenes video sparked speculation among fans, fueling rumors about a potential comeback for the longtime character.

Here’s what actually happened and what it means for the future of Austin in Salem.

Is Patrick Muldoon’s Austin really returning on Days of Our Lives?

Patrick Muldoon is not returning to Days of Our Lives as Austin Reed.

A spokesperson for the show confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Muldoon was only visiting the studio to give a tour to a friend. The show’s video post of his appearance was described as “tongue in cheek.” Earlier, Soap Opera Digest reported Muldoon’s return based on an Instagram video where the actor appeared to tease a comeback.

In the clip, Muldoon walks through the studio and says, “Oh my God, I’m in Salem! Oh, it’s good to be back.” The outlet later retracted the story, acknowledging they “deeply regret” not waiting for official confirmation from the show.

Muldoon originally played Austin Reed from 1992 to 1995. He returned to the role in 2011 for a brief stint and reprised it again in Beyond Salem in 2021. After his 1995 exit, Austin Peck took over the character and portrayed him in several runs between 1995 and 2021.

Muldoon described landing the role as “simply another audition” and recalled getting selected after a screen test with Tracy Middendorf. He left the show in 1995 because he wanted to explore other opportunities. Reflecting on his 2011 return, Muldoon said, “It felt like coming home to family,” but acknowledged the challenge of stepping back into a role that another actor had redefined.

Since leaving Days of Our Lives, Muldoon has worked in several films, including Deadly Revenge, A Horse Tale, Bernie the Dolphin, and Murder at Hollow Creek. The recent studio visit does not signal a storyline or return for Austin Reed on-screen.
