The report of Betsy Gay’s death has sparked widespread social media mourning. The actress’ friend, Robert Satterfield, posted a tribute in her real name, Elizabeth Cashen.
Satterfield wrote on Facebook, “Elizabeth, was better known as child actress and singer Betsy Gay (February 2, 1929-June 13, 2025). She appeared in The Pinch Singer, Arbor Day, Our Gang Follies of 1938, and Came the Brawn with the Our Gang Comedies.”
Robert Satterfield shared not only the news of her passing but also rare photographs from her early days in Hollywood. He highlighted her appearance at the final Little Rascals reunion held in 2014, calling attention to her lifelong connection to the series.
Along with her acting career, Gay recorded songs for various music labels. The artist reportedly recorded the song “Belle of the Old Barn Dance” for Superior Record Label in 1946. After that, she went on a tour following the East Coast route, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The last acting project Gay took was in 1943 for What’s Buzzin’, Cousin? where she played the character of Saree. The film, directed by Charles Barton and written by Harry Sauber and John P. Medbury, also features Ann Miller and Eddie “Rochester” Anderson.
Betsy Gay also possessed exceptional yodeling talent, mastering the demanding vocal technique that alternates rapidly between chest voice and falsetto. Her rare singing ability earned her back-to-back California State Yodeling Championship in 1945 and 1946, showcasing skills that set her apart from other child performers of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
