Why You Season 5 Is the Last & Season 6 Will Never Happen

After five intense seasons of obsession, murder, and psychological twists, You has officially released its last installment, aka Season 5. Penn Badgley’s chilling yet charming take on Joe Goldberg has kept viewers on edge, but his story has now come to a definitive end. If viewers were hoping for a You Season 6, here’s why it’s not happening.

Is You Season 5 the last and final one?

Yes, You Season 5 is the last and final installment, and Netflix has no plans to continue the series.

The show’s executive producers, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, always intended for Joe’s story to happen over five seasons, and they’ve stuck to that vision. You Season 5 brought Joe full circle, returning him to New York, where his journey began.

But this time, his luck runs out. After years of manipulation, stalking, and killing, justice finally catches up with him. The season’s climax sees Joe arrested, convicted, and locked away for good—a fitting end for a character who has evaded consequences for so long.

Adding to the finality, Penn Badgley’s contract with Netflix ended in 2024, aligning perfectly with the show’s conclusion. As the showrunners pointed out, getting the chance to wrap up a story after five seasons is rare, and they made sure Joe’s ending was both satisfying and irreversible.

Why does You end before Season 6?

You concludes with nowhere left for the story to go.

Joe is in prison for life, and the people he tormented — like Kate, Nadia, and Marienne — have moved on. A You Season 6 would have to introduce a new storyline that strays from the original premise.

That doesn’t mean the You universe is completely dead. A spinoff could explore other characters, like Joe and Love’s son, Henry, or follow survivors like Marienne as they rebuild their lives. But as of now, Netflix hasn’t announced any plans for a continuation.
