A member of the dogbane family, this flowering plant produces toxins as a natural defense mechanism. Pong Pong typically grows in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and northern Australia.
According to National Geographic, the seeds of the suicide tree contain the highest concentration of the toxin cerberin. As a cardiac glycoside, cerberin affects the heart and can cause fatal outcomes. Ingesting the seeds can pose serious health risks, including cardiac arrest and death. Once consumed, the poison travels from the stomach into the bloodstream.
Within about 20 to 30 minutes of ingesting Pong Pong seeds, the body triggers nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea to attempt to eliminate the toxin.
