Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election and the current Vice-President of the country, appeared on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, October 8. As she shared a beer with the host, Harris offered her views on a wide range of topics during the 40-minute interview. She spoke about the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, the report about her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, sending COVID test machines to the Russian president Vladimir Putin, and her favorite football team.
What Kamala Harris said in Stephen Colbert interview
During her most recent appearance at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater, Harris drank a can of Miller High Life with Colbert, with the host disclosing that the former chose the particular brand beforehand. “OK, the last time I had beer was at a baseball game with Doug. So, okay, cheers!” Harris said, before taking a sip.
With the beverage originating in Milwaukee, the most populous city of the famously swing-state Wisconsin, Colbert quipped, “So that covers Wisconsin.” He added, “Alright, let’s do Pennsylvania. Eagles or Steelers? And no one will be mad.” This prompted a diplomatic answer from Harris as she chose the San Francisco 49ers.
The conversation covered the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. “We must have a ceasefire and hostage deal as immediately as possible,” Harris said. “This war has got to end. It has to end” (via The Guardian). She also mentioned that she met with the families of hostages and those of the Palestinians killed in Gaza. “We’ve got to get a deal done and we’re not going to give up,” she stated.
Recently, it has come to light that journalist Bob Woodward has claimed in his new book, War, that Trump had as many as seven telephonic conversations with Putin since leaving office and dispatched rare COVID test machines to Russia in the early days of the pandemic. Both Kremlin and Trump have refuted the allegations.
“I ask everyone here and everyone who is watching: do you remember what those days were like? You remember how many people did not have tests and were trying to scramble to get them,” Harris said about the test kits.
“And this man [Trump] is giving Covid test kits to Vladimir Putin? Think about what this means on top of him sending love letters to Kim Jong-un,” she continued. “He thinks, well, that’s his friend. What about the American people? They should be your first friend.”
Cobert asked a “gotcha question” on whether Trump lost the 2020 election. Harris said in response, “You know, when you lost millions of jobs, you lost manufacturing, you lost automotive plants, you lost the election. What does that make you? A loser.” She continued, “This is what somebody at my rallies said. I thought it was funny.”
