The plot revolves around Di Renjie, a gifted investigator, as he solves complex cases in the Tang Dynasty. Van Gulik drew inspiration for his work from Di Gong An, an 18th-century Chinese novel by an anonymous author. In that novel and those by Van Gulik, Di Renjie is modeled after the namesake historical county magistrate and statesman from seventh-century China.
