Oscars 2024: Why Did People Wear Red Pins & Buttons?

Many people wore red pins throughout Oscars 2024 to support a cause. Why was that the case and what is the significance behind it? Here’s everything you need to know.

Why did stars wear red pins at the Oscars 2024?

Many people walked onto the 96th Academy Awards red carpet sporting red “Artists4Ceasefire” pins to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and stop the Israel-Palestine war.

The Oscars saw multiple actors and celebrities making political statements through their wardrobe choices. While some attendees supported equal pay in the industry with pink “Pay Equity Now” pins, others called to save trans children with pink, white, and blue flag pins.

But the ones that caught everyone’s eyes were the “Artists4Ceasefire” red pins with a hand and heart logo on them. Artists4Ceasefire is an association of film/music/TV industry advocates, actors, musicians, and filmmakers who have united to stop the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold between Israel and Palestine.

All celebrities wearing the pins wish for an immediate ceasefire between the two nations, the delivery of humanitarian aid to all the Gaza civilians who need it, and the release of everyone who has been held hostage in the name of the Israel-Palestine war.

Previously, the Screen Actors Guild Awards saw popular celebrities including Arian Moayed, Tony Shalhoub, Khalid Abdalla, Salim Daw, and others wearing red pins.

Now, the following actors, directors, and musicians were spotted wearing these red pins to support the cause during the Oscars:

  • Ramy Youssef
  • Ava DuVernay
  • Mark Ruffalo
  • Billie Eilish
  • Riz Ahmed
  • Mahershala Ali
  • Misan Harriman

There were a few other people who wore the Artists4Ceasefire pins.

But before the Oscars, 380+ celebrities signed on to a petition letter addressed to President Joe Biden and other world leaders to call for a “ceasefire” between Palestine and Israel. It also asks to provide necessary aid to people stuck in Gaza and release every hostage. The likes of Jennifer Lopez, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, and many other high-profile celebs have signed the letter.
