Dune: Awakening: Is the Game Based on the Movies or Books?

Fans are wondering if the upcoming Dune: Awakening video game is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune novels and the recent Dune movies. Here is all you need to know.

Is the new Dune game based on the movies or books?

The new Dune game will be based on the movies and the books.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Joel Bylos, the creative director of Dune: Awakening, shed light on the project. When talking about how the upcoming game will fit into the wider Dune universe, he mentioned that it will be based on the movies and books. He confirmed gamers will be able to see all the things that they are familiar with from the films.

Bylos also mentioned in the interview that characters from Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film will be in Dune: Awakening. He cited Duke Leto Atreides as an example of one of the characters players can meet and engage with in the game’s open world.

Is the Dune: Awakening game considered canon?

The Dune: Awakening game is not canon as, according to creative director Joel Bylos, it will be set in an alternate timeline separate from the events of the films and books.

According to Joel Bylos in the PC Gamer interview, Dune: Awakening will be set eight years after the events of 2021’s Dune. However, it will be in an alternate timeline:

“It’s similar to the books, but we’ve gone with an alternate history, like a ‘what-if’, if you want, We worked closely with the Herbert [family] and Legendary [Pictures], and we found a point, a single point, the single pebble that starts a landslide.”

Bylos did not elaborate on the single point that changes everything in the story. He did imply that this change would allow players to meet characters they otherwise would not be able to. This is because many major Dune characters die early in the story, such as Duke Leto Atreides. The senior Atreides will reportedly be alive in the game, despite dying early on in the original story.

In entertainment elsewhere, a Young Sheldon spin-off has officially been ordered by CBS. Also, here is the Blu-ray 4K release date for The Departed.
