Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024): Is It a Reboot or Sequel? Will Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie Return?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2024) is hitting Prime Video and fans are wondering if it is a reboot, sequel, or a prequel of the original movie. Is it connected to the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film? Will the two actors return? Here’s all you need to know.

Is Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith a reboot or sequel of the original movie?

2024’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith series is a reimagination. It is confirmed to be set in the same world as the original 2005 film but tells a new story.

The latest action-comedy series is a complete reboot of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s film. It uses a few similar elements in its overall narrative. But there are quite a few changes in the reimagination of the story.

However, while speaking with The Direct, Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane revealed that the new series still takes place in the same universe as the previous film. She said:

“Yeah… I think even though our show is obviously its own thing and has its own tone, there are some Easter eggs to allude to the fact that it is still within that same world.”

But this time around, the aliases of John and Jane Smith are taken on by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, respectively.

Will Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie return in Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith?

Despite taking place in the same universe, neither Brad Pitt nor Angelina Jolie will be returning in Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Francesca Sloane confirmed in her interview that we shouldn’t expect cameos from Pitt and Jolie. She said:

“I’ll be real, Donald and Brad hung out. There was, you know, some,–But you know, he gave us his blessings and love for the show.”

Besides Glover and Erskine, the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith series stars Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, and more.

The official synopsis of the series reads:

“Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”
