The Anchorman franchise is one of the most popular and well-made comedy films of recent years. The plot revolves around anchorman Ron Burgundy and his fellow newscasters as they inevitably get involved in various shenanigans. Is there an Anchorman 3 release date?
Anchorman 3 does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.
As of January 2024, Anchorman 3 hasn’t been officially announced, though the conversations about it have been going around since the release of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. That film garnered 75% approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $173.6 million at the global box office against its $50 million budget.
Early in February 2014, Adam McKay, the director of both the previous films, told Empire that there would not be a third Anchorman film. However, in April, he revisited his previous statement in an interview with Time and stated, “I said about a month ago that we’d never do a third one, and I realized that was a little too harsh because the truth is, I really don’t know. With these movies, you really don’t know how they’ve played until about two years after they come out, when people see them on repeat viewing. That tends to be how our movies work.”
The filmmaker added, “If Anchorman 2 gets that sort of second life, if three, four years from now people start asking us that question a lot and there’s an idea, we would be open to that.”
In 2018, McKay told Cinemablend that Anchorman 3 could be about the Iraq War. There were unconfirmed reports in 2020 that the film was in development, but not much has been heard about that since then. David Koechner, who portrays Champ Kind in the franchise, said in 2021, “It took 11 years between the first and second one. So 11 years after the second one maybe.”
