Made in Abyss controversy explained

Soobin of TXT, Woozi of SEVENTEEN, Taeyong of NCT, and Mingi of ATEEZ are just some of the K-pop idols who are under scrutiny right now. This is due to posts showing that they watched, read, or liked Made in Abyss.

The seinen (youth) series has been trending on Twitter for the past day. K-pop fans have been criticizing the show for its dark themes. Such themes include graphic depictions of abuse and torture. Because of this, they are calling out these idols and canceling them for being fans of this manga and anime that has problematic content.

Meanwhile, the anime community has mixed responses regarding the controversy. While some agree with the series’ problematic themes, another side thinks that the criticisms are overblown.

On the other hand, the series is critically acclaimed worldwide, receiving many positive comments. Crunchyroll itself listed Made in Abyss in its rundown of the best anime series of the 2010s.

The Made in Abyss manga began serialization in October 2012 in Web Comic Gamma. Meanwhile, Seven Seas Entertainment handles the English publication. The first season of the anime premiered in 2017. The second season followed in 2022. The story follows Riko, an orphan, and Reg, a half-robot as they explore the depths of the Abyss as Riko searches for her mother.
