One Piece: What Does the “D” Stand For?

While we don’t exactly know yet what the “D” stands for, throughout the story it has been called the Will of D. It remains a mystery in the series so far, and it concerns certain characters who have D in their names.

Donquixote Rosinante (Corazon) told Trafalgar Law what he knew about it. He called it the fated family of D. In Marijoa, a threat to misbehaving kids was that D would eat them. Apparently, the D’s were also known for causing “storms.” They are also known as the “Natural Enemy of God.” In the case of the Celestial Dragons, they consider the D’s to be their enemy because the Celestial Dragons consider themselves as gods. Meanwhile, Imu says the D was used by their enemies of the Void Century.

Will of D Meaning: What We Know So Far

Early on in the story, Roger was commonly known as Gold Roger. Kureha reveals the real name of Roger was Gol D. Roger. Robin also asked multiple people about the Will of D. In the Alabasta arc, she asked Luffy why people with D in their names fight, but Luffy didn’t know anything about it. In Skypiea, when she was talking to Gan Fall, he said that Luffy reminded him of Roger. She also asked Rayleigh about it, including the Void Century. Rayleigh didn’t say anything about it but said they found out stuff about the Void Century.

In a flashback, Roger tells Whitebeard about the meaning of D. During the Summit War at Marineford, he said killing someone with a D won’t deter the flames of their will. After Oden and the Roger Pirates went to Laugh Tale, they learned about the D’s meaning. Meanwhile, at one point, Law pondered if the Will of D would cause a storm again. Additionally, D means danger, according to One of the Five Elders.

It’s common for the D to be passed down between generations, but not everyone who bears this initial is necessarily related by blood.
