As of now, there has been no official release date announcement for the sequel. However, there have been several hints as to why a sequel to the stop-motion classic won’t be a possibility.
Travis Knight, the president and CEO of Laika, the animation studio behind the film, firmly stands against making sequels, as per a report by Collider. While he’s surprised at how his fellow industry colleagues are shocked at his viewpoint, he said, “There are…continuing stories that are a regurgitation of the same things we’ve seen over and over again. And I have no interest in doing that.”
Moreover, Neil Gaiman also hasn’t written another book, so the chances of a sequel seem slim. In March 2022, he also shut down rumors of a sequel in response to a fan question on Twitter. When a fan asked if a sequel was in the works, he said, “No.” However, he might have not completely ruled out the possibility.
According to a report by Comicbook.com in 2022, Gaiman expressed that he hadn’t come up with anything as cool or even better than the original movie, and wasn’t keen on doing “one of those sequels that sort of feels like a made for video sequel.” He further said, “If you’re gonna do something, it needs to be a Toy Story 2 or The Godfather Part 2 level sequel where you’re actually upping your game. So I absolutely wouldn’t rule it out, but would absolutely want to go ‘Okay, that is the thing that is just even cooler than Coraline.”
As of now, nothing is confirmed, so fans will only have to wait and hope for Gaiman to come up with an even better storyline and eventually a sequel.
