Barbie Highest Grossing Movie: How Does the Film & Greta Gerwig Rank?

The Barbie movie has already been in the theaters for a month now, solidifying its status as one of the highest-grossing films and quickly becoming arguably the biggest live-action blockbuster in 2023. Is Barbie really one of the highest-grossing movies? And where does Greta Gerwig rank among the highest-grossing directors? Here’s what you need to know.

Is Barbie one of the highest-grossing movies?

Barbie is one of the highest-grossing movies ever made.

The 2023 blockbuster is smashing all kinds of box-office records, becoming the fastest Warner Bros. movie to reach $1 billion gross worldwide after only 17 days of theatrical run. Barbie is also part of the short-listed club of films that earned more than $1 billion at the box office. And while the flamboyant film won’t dethrone 2009’s Avatar and its $ 2.9 billion gross, Barbie did make its way into the top 25 of the highest-grossing films.

Barbie also currently sits as the second-highest-grossing film of 2023 after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but that might change in the upcoming weeks. The theatrical run of the Gerwig-directed movie is far from being over.

Is Barbie’s Greta Gerwig the highest-grossing female director?

Greta Gerwig is the highest-grossing solo female director in a live-action movie.

Only 28 men and one woman are credited for directing a billion-dollar movie. Gerwig is that woman. Best known for her work on the indie film scene, Gerwig has made a name for herself as a critically-acclaimed director after 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women.

It’s worth mentioning that Frozen II was co-directed by a woman, Jennifer Lee, and grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office. 2019’s Captain Marvel is another example of a billion-dollar movie co-directed by a woman, Anna Boden.
