Is there a Shang-Chi 2 release date?
The Shang-Chi 2 release date could arrive sometime in 2027.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hit theaters on September 2, 2021, and made $432 million worldwide during tough pandemic times. It also has a 91% Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and an 8.4 rating on IMDb. So, a sequel will happen, and Marvel has confirmed that Destin Daniel Cretton will continue as the franchise director.
However, we shouldn’t expect a release date any time soon. In a recent post on the new social media platform Threads, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu ran an “Ask me anything” thread, and a fan asked him about Shang-Chi 2’s status. He replied that he “was told it would follow Avengers, but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control 🙁 hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”
Considering that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been pushed to May 1, 2026, it is obvious that Shang-Chi 2 will only happen after that. Destin Daniel Cretton is busy with the Wonder Man series, which will arrive on Disney Plus in 2024 or 2025. Following that, he’d direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Only then can he get to Shang-Chi 2!
Hence, we should expect the film to happen by the earliest in late 2027 (after May 7, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars) unless it sees a directorial change. In that case, it could arrive in late 2026, as all other Marvel release dates before that are slated for other projects. But it’s likely that Shang-Chi 2 will only happen in 2027 or later. Before that, we’d see Shang-Chi return in The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
