The first-person shooter and open-world Far Cry franchise first began in 2004 with the well-received Crytek-developed PC title and would follow with the 2005 remake on consoles from Ubisoft Montreal and sequels with 2008’s Far Cry 2 and 2012’s Far Cry 3 both receiving very positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. The latter title would see the publisher and developer begin to toy with the concept of spin-offs and expansion pack’s with the neon-filed ’80s action movie-inspired Blood Dragon, which received very positive reviews, and after Far Cry 4, Ubisoft would continue to toy with the formula with 2016’s Far Cry Primal, which received more mixed reviews than its predecessors.

The most recent title, New Dawn, marked the first time in the franchise’s history in which a game acted as a direct narrative sequel to its previous installment, Far Cry 5, which featured an ending in which a nuclear bomb was set off and caused a nuclear war around the world. New Dawn received more mixed reviews from critics and saw lower sales than Far Cry Primal and 5.
