The original game, released in the final months of 2003 for the GameCube, Xbox, PC, PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance, was developed by Heavy Iron Studios, AWE Games and Vicarious Visions and followed our favorite underwater animated characters as they must defend their town against an invasion of robots created by Chum Bucket owner Plankton to steal the Krabby Patty formula, only for his evil mind to forget to take a step to ensure he can maintain control of them, effectively kicking him out of his own restaurant and lies to our heroes in order to get their help bringing the robots down.

The trailer’s official description for the remake, subtitled Rehydrated, reads as follows:

“Are you ready, kids? The cult classic is back, faithfully remade in spongetastic splendor! Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr. Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots? Of course you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn’t you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on!”

The original game initially received generally positive reviews from critics, pointing out its generic gameplay while simultaneously praising the graphics, atmosphere, sound design and immersion into the cartoon world. It was a high-selling game for every console, ranking in the top 100 selling games for PlayStation 2 and the Top 50 for Game Boy Advance. With the emergence of speed-running becoming popular amongst modern gamers and the YouTube community, it became a cult favorite, with Heavy Iron expressing interest in working on a sequel or remake in the years since however, Purple Lamp Studios is taking on the development process from Heavy Iron.
