Three of Idea Factory and Compile Heart’s most beloved JRPGs are now on PlayStation 4. The Re;Birth Game Bundle includes Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1+, Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, and Re;Birth3: V Generation in one affordable $59.99 package.
What makes the Hyperdimension Neptunia games so unique and loved by fans is their meta approach. All of the main characters are based on game consoles, and it brings the console wars to life with warring nations (such as Leanbox, Lastation, etc.). There’s some sharp dialogue to be found, and the fun meta approach is what has always made the series stand out (along with a fair share of fan service elements).
All three Re;Birth titles are enhanced ports of the original trilogy of JRPGs, which all came out on PS3 originally. They’ve been given better graphics (although they’re all still rather rudimentary looking) and a few small quality-of-life upgrades. If you’re fully new to the series, the remake of 1 on PS5 — Neptunia ReVerse — is actually the best starting point, but it’s nice to have all three of the Re;Birth games together.
Sisters Generation is actually my favorite of the bunch, as it has a fun story of focusing on the little sisters of the main characters, and it builds upon the original well. None of the games are classics of the JRPG genre, but they’re fun and nostalgic to revisit. Gameplay features a pretty large combat field where you can move around before performing skills and attacks. Positioning becomes key as the game goes on, as you can unleash some pretty great combos. It’s a deeper game than some might expect from the game’s general tone, but it never becomes overly challenging if you focus on leveling up.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth Series PS4 Review: Final Verdict
The new PS4 ports of the Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth series are pretty straightforward. Don’t expect a ton of new features or any further modernization, but it’s great to see all of these playable on modern consoles, as they’ve been on PC for years. It’s a great way for newcomers to experience the original trilogy, while older fans can relive some nostalgia as well.
SCORE: 8/10
