CD Projekt says Cyberpunk 2077 is more ambitious than Witcher 3

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said in a presentation at the Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar that the studio’s upcoming sci-fi roleplaying video game Cyberpunk 2077 will be their “new ‘Witcher 3,’ but more ambitious.” You can watch the presentation in the player below starting at 3:16:00.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, developed by the company’s RED division, came out in 2015 to great critical acclaim, winning 251 Game of the Year awards, and enormous commercial success, selling almost 10 million units. The Witcher franchise has sold in total 25 million copies.

So when CD Projekt says that they want Cyberpunk 2077 to be “a new blockbuster franchise,” they are building up some very lofty expectations for a game that so far has had very little information released to the public.

Kicinski didn’t offer any new details about Cyberpunk 2077, but he did emphasize what was already known regarding the direction of the game, as seen in his statements below:

“Cyberpunk is our new Witcher 3, but even more ambitious. Our goal is to establish a new blockbuster franchise from the beginning. We work [in a] new universe, futuristic universe. We believe it’s very appealing to players, not only RPG players—but this is [a] true RPG, like Witcher, like Witcher 3, for mature audiences. It’s handcrafted, detailed, of course open-world, with open-ended gameplay.

“Great game, more ambitious than Witcher 3, and we believe that we can aim [at] more ambitious business goals as well—of course, still having gamer-centric focus and quality focus as a main priority.”

CD Projekt RED has confirmed its attendance at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, so we should expect news about Cyberpunk 2077 during the event. Maybe then we’ll have more concrete evidence that points to it being a worthy RPG successor to The Witcher 3.
