Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 906,000 Units in March

Nintendo Switch sales surpass 906,000 Units in March, with Breath of the Wild hitting over 1.3 million

Nintendo just revealed some pretty impressive numbers for the Nintendo Switch sales last month. The game company sold more than 906,000 units in March, which isn’t a traditional console launch month. This makes the Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. The numbers come from the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

NPD Group also tracked the critically-acclaimed game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which sold over 1.3 million units for the Switch and the Wii U combined. That makes it the fastest-selling game in The Legend of Zelda series, and the best-selling Nintendo launch title. There were 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console. This means that there were more Breath of the Wild sales than there were Nintendo Switch sales.

“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

All this comes shortly after the announcement that Nintendo would discontinue the NES Classic Edition, with the final shipments going out this month. The company told IGN, “Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

For those of you who still haven’t been able to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch, the company says, “Nintendo is working to make sure everyone who wants a system is able to buy one, and more systems are continually being shipped.” This would be helpful as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will launch for the system on April 28, ARMS on June 16 and Splatoon 2 on July 21.
