The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann makes bold statement about next game

The Last of Us Creator’s New Game Will ‘Redefine Mainstream Perceptions’ of Games

Sony seems pretty excited about its Creative Entertainment Vision project, which attempts to imagine where gaming might be in ten years. Among those looking toward the future is The Last of Us creator and Naughty Dog Studio Head Neil Druckmann, who says his next game “could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”

The Last of Us creator makes a bold statement about his next game

“There’s a growing appreciation for gaming that transcends all age groups, unlike when I was growing up,” said Druckmann. “This shift is highlighted by our venture into television with The Last of Us, which I hoped would bridge the gap between gamers and non-gamers… This visibility excites me not only for our current project but for the broader potential of gaming to captivate a global audience. I’m eager to see how this new game resonates, especially following the success of The Last of Us, as it could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”

This is a big claim on Druckmann’s part, though that’s been the theme with Sony’s Creative Entertainment Vision in general. The project examines how technology will reshape entertainment, heavily emphasizing immersive experiences. Druckmann touched on that during the Creative Entertainment Vision interview, discussing The Last of Us experience at Universal Studios Hollywood.

He also talked extensively about the future he sees in tools like AI that make content creation more accessible. The Last of Us creator acknowledges that there are still ethical questions but doesn’t see AI replacing human creativity. “I emphasize mastering fundamentals over tools; with AI, your creativity sets the limits,” said Druckmann. “Understanding art history, composition, and storytelling is essential for effective direction… AI will allow us to create nuanced dialogues and characters, expanding creative possibilities. However, it’s crucial to precisely direct these tools to achieve the intended outcomes.”

The creator of The Last of Us also described how modern game graphics make transferring assets to movies and TV easier. This mirrors the words of PlayStation’s Head of Production, Asad-Qizilbash, who Sony also interviewed for its Creative Entertainment Vision project.
