Contrary to an earlier announcement, the original isometric Fallout games won’t be free on the Epic Games Store next week. However, Epic confirmed that the games will be free on the platform later this year.
Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics will be free on the Epic Games Store later in 2024
Last week, the Epic Game store announced the classic Fallout games would be free from February 22 to 29. However, Epic Games suddenly replaced the page with one advertising that Super Meat Boy Forever would be free during that period. A spokesperson from Epic Games later told a reporter from IGN that the classic Fallouts will be free later in 2024. However, they didn’t clarify precisely when that will be. It’s also not clear how this mix-up happened in the first place.
The games in question are the original Fallout from 1997, Fallout 2 from 1998, and 2001’s Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel. Developed by Interplay Productions, the 1997 game laid the groundwork for what would go on to be a massively successful franchise. Many Fallout icons like Vaults, Super Mutants, Ghouls, and the Brotherhood of Steel originated with the 1997 game. Its sequel is generally regarded as an upgrade to the original and introduced factions such as the Enclave and NCR. The Interplay games also form the first two parts of a trilogy that concluded with Obsidian’s New Vegas in 2010.
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood is something of an odd man in the franchise. Developed by Micro Forte, the game introduced squad-based tactics to the post-apocalyptic RPG series. The game was not as successful as its predecessors but still has fans, and its lore continues to influence the Bethesda Fallout games.
