Game developer CD Projekt Red has announced that it is in the process of collaborating with Fool’s Theory in remaking the first game in the beloved Witcher series.

The remake, which is still early in the development process, will use Unreal Engine 5 and has the codename Canis Majoris. Due to it being early in development, the company stated that it will be “a while” before further details about the remake will be shared. The announcement tweet features a logo for the remake surrounded by fire.

“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” said CD Projekt Red head of studio Adam Badowski. “Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”
The original Witcher game first launched in 2007 for the PC and told a new story of the legendary Geralt of Rivia — one set after the beloved Witcher book series. Though positively received at the time, fans have expressed that the title has become somewhat dated in the 15 years since it was released, making it a prime candidate for a now-confirmed remake.

“Become The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, a legendary monster slayer caught in a web of intrigue woven by forces vying for control of the world,” reads the first game’s synopsis. “Make difficult decisions and live with the consequences in a game that will immerse you in an extraordinary tale like no other.”
