Sega Genesis Mini 2 Confirmed for North American Release

Sega Genesis Mini 2 Confirmed for North American Release

Following a Japanese reveal last month, the Sega Genesis Mini 2 is headed stateside on October 27. The mini-console will be an Amazon exclusive and features a design based on the Genesis Model 2. Over 50 titles from across the Genesis and Sega CD libraries will come preinstalled, with 23 of them revealed alongside the console on Sega’s official website. The complete list includes Sonic CD, OutRunSonic 3D Blast, and Fantasy Zone, among many others.

The list of revealed games so far matches somewhat with the games bundled with the Japanese Mega Drive Mini 2, but there are some differences. Both consoles will get the never-before-released Genesis port of Star Mobile, but only American gamers will experience distinctly U.S. releases like The Ooze. Meanwhile, Japanese players get more puzzle action with games like Columns III: Revenge of the Columns. The lists could align as more titles come to light, but it seems that each console will have some uniqueness to its library, just as the original did. It also hasn’t yet been confirmed for European territories.

The console has one wired six-button controller and a USB power adapter in the box alongside the standard power and HDMI hookups. It’s also worth noting that the original, like many mini-consoles, was immediately moddable and ran a host of otherwise unincluded Genesis games with a bit of tinkering. Still, those interested in keeping things official should look for more game reveals in the coming months.
