Tales From the Borderlands Sequel Announced

New Tales From the Borderlands Announced

While it released after many had grown tired of Telltale Games’ titles, Tales From the Borderlands was one of the studio’s most beloved titles. Hopes for a second season were mostly dashed when the studio collapsed in 2018. And even though the studio was revived after, it didn’t speak again about the series and is currently working on The Wolf Among Us 2 and The Expanse. However, Gearbox Software and 2K are returning to the franchise on their own, as the two announced that a new Tales From the Borderlands was in production and will be out later this year on undisclosed platforms.

Gearbox Entertainment Company CEO Randy Pitchford announced the new title at PAX East during a panel. In a video captured by YouTuber JayShockblast, Pitchford said that the studio thought it would be “fun and exciting to dive into the format of interactive fiction.” It will have all new characters and stories, further cementing this game as its own thing and not a sequel. Pitchford also said that Gearbox has been developing it in secret for many years. A more formal announcement of the game will come this summer.

Being developed at Gearbox is different and likely to rub some people the wrong way. The first Tales From the Borderlands was widely revered for its comedy and sharp writing. Gearbox’s games, however, are usually maligned precisely for their writing and have often been criticized for having stiff or cringeworthy comedy, which the recently released Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was not exempt from. It’s unclear if it will have some or any of the original writers, but is unlikely since Pitchford did not mention it.
