Guillermo del Toro Says He’s (Still) Not Working on Silent Hill

Silent Hills is one of those ones that got away. But with Konami reportedly reviving the series and Kojima Productions allegedly developing one of those Silent Hill games, it seems possible that something in the vein of Silent Hills could be in the works. Director Guillermo del Toro was recently spotted at The Game Awards, which fueled speculation that he would be involved in any of these efforts. However, the Hellboy and Shape of Water director said he’s still not part of the series.

Speaking on the December 22 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast (around 34:39 in), when prompted about his appearance at The Game Awards (where Hideo Kojima debuted a trailer for del Toro’s Nightmare Alley) and any possible ties to Silent Hill, del Toro denied that he was involved.

“No, not at all,” he said, plainly.

However, del Toro did not leave it at that. He took the opportunity to speak candidly about Konami and the whole kerfuffle that happened around P.T., the ill-fated Silent Hills teaser.

“It’s one of those things in my life that makes no sense, but I kind of just wanted to tickle the ribs on Konami a little bit,” he said. “I don’t understand. That was so perfect. It was so perfect, the match. What we were going to do was so enthralling. Kojima is one of the guys that is a filmmaker. Like I was talking about a minute ago, I love talking to filmmakers and storytellers. Gaming as a storytelling exercise fascinates me. I would not develop a game I think again because I’m the albatross of videogaming, but I am very intrigued by the devices and how you learn.”

Combined with horror manga artist Junji Ito who was also slated to work on Silent Hills in addition to actor Norman Reedus, it’s easy to see why del Toro saw his collaborated with Kojima as a “perfect” match. Del Toro did lend his likeness to Death Stranding, but his other video game projects have not lifted off the ground, which explains why he thinks he is the “albatross” of gaming. He was set to work with THQ on a game called Insane, but the title (that was intended to be a trilogy) was canceled in 2012 after its 2010 announcement. Del Toro has also spoken about his love of games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill.
