Dune: Spice Wars Announced, RTS Based on Novel

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune film may have just recently released in theaters and HBO Max, but now there will be a video game take on Frank Herbert’s classic novels. As announced during The Game Awards, Dune: Spice Wars is a PC real-time strategy game that’s slated to launch sometime in 2022 after debuting in Early Access.

Dune: Spice Wars will have several factions to play and many ways to play them. However, the goal of controlling Arrakis’ spice is all the same. Players can sabotage, spy, and assassinate opponents or use politically means to win or “simply overwhelm” the opposition with “economic and technological supremacy.”

Shiro Games is developing the title and has experience in the genre from creating its 2018 title Northgard. This game is not to be confused with the Stellaris mod with a similar name or the mysterious open-world survival game in the Dune universe that Funcom is also publishing as a part of its deal for a “line of [Dune] video games” that will include three Dune titles. Shiro Games CEO and Founder Sebastien Vidal also spoke about the game.

“I think I speak for every single person at Shiro Games, when I say that we are all massive fans of Dune — both of the original novel and the new and spectacular Denis Villeneuve film. To be able to bring this universe to life as a strategy game again is incredible,” he said. “The Dune universe is the perfect setting for a strategy game. You have major factions, such as House Atreides and House Harkonnen, with a rivalry that spans back centuries. You have political intrigue, deception, and warfare, all centered around what is by far the most valuable substance in the universe: Spice. And then there is the stage itself, Arrakis, a hostile planet full of hidden wonders to explore. Massive sandworms that can devour entire armies, sandstorms, spice harvesters, all of which our amazing team of developers have incorporated into this game.”
