Returnal Update Adds Two Highly Requested Features

Returnal 2.0 Update Adds 2 Highly Requested Features

Returnal is still one of the highest-rated games of the year, but many took issue with its lack of a suspend feature. This meant users would have to use the PlayStation 5’s rest mode to take a break or abandon their run if they wanted to play another game. While it took about five months, the Returnal 2.0 update addresses this and also adds another big feature: Photo Mode. The update is out now.

Housemarque went into more detail about the update on the PlayStation Blog. The Suspend Cycle function lets players pause their game and come back later and can be used anytime outside of fights, the first-person segments in the house, and cinematics. But this doesn’t create a traditional save. Instead, it uses a suspend point that can only be used once. Once the player loads back into that suspension point, the suspension point is disappears.

This means players can pick up their game later, but can’t return to that point again if they die. It’s more of a temporary, one-time save. However, it’s likely that players will be able to upload that suspension point save to the cloud to get around that. Game Director Harry Krueger stated that it helps keep the “roguelike spirit” of the game, but gives its users some added convenience.

The Photo Mode is the other big bullet point. It appears to have many of the typical Photo Mode features and will let players pause the action and snap a picture. There are a variety of effects, filters, frames, coloring options, lens options, and more. Players can even add their own light sources, as has been the case in Insomniac Games’ recent titles.

The Returnal 2.0 update also contains “numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements,” but the official patch notes don’t detail what those are just yet. This announcement didn’t come alongside any DLC reveals or teases, but Housemarque told Axios in May that it was working on “new content and updates and fixes and stuff like that.”
