Spider-Man Coming to Marvel's Avengers in 2021!

Spider-Man Coming to Marvel’s Avengers in 2021

We may only be a month away from the highly-anticipated debut of Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers and after revealing last week that Hawkeye would be joining the roster in a post-launch release, it’s now been announced that Spider-Man will also be swinging into the game in 2021 exclusively on PlayStation consoles for free.

In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Crystal Dynamics’ Associate Art Director Jeff Adams revealed bringing the character to the title is “so personal” to him, as he grew up seeing himself reflected in Peter Parker, and offered new details on what players will be able to do as the webslinger as he is taken out of his home New York.

“Watching Spider-Man adapt to new surroundings was such a great contrast to his status quo,” Adams wrote. “That tone is exactly what we want to capture for him in Marvel’s Avengers.  A familiar but fresh Spider-Man who needs to evolve to take on global threats alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. To make sure this team up goes smoothly, Vince Napoli, our Lead Combat Designer, is hard at work making Spider-Man just as great on the sticks as he is on the page.  This means making sure our hero moves and fights like he should, no matter which one of our War Zones he finds himself in.  When he’s arcing through the air on his web line, we want you to feel graceful and light, and be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal.  Spider-Man’s impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat.”

In building this combat, Adams says players will be able to fluidly fight enemies and will get to use the “unique skill tree” that Napoli and his team are utilizing for the rest of the ensemble Marvel roster, which will include an “impressive suite of iconic abilities and attacks” as well as gadgets and skills that can be upgraded along the way. He also describes Crystal’s adaptation of the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko-created character as “sensational,” seeing his partnership with Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Ms. Marvel adding “a whole new dimension” to the character.

“It’s not enough for Spider-Man to just play like he should… he also needs to look like he should,” Adams wrote. “That’s why when going through the process of conceptualizing his suit, we went back to the beginning.  Steve Ditko set the standard with his Spider-Man design, and John Romita Sr. evolved it into an icon recognized the world over.  Fans can expect to see Ditko and Romita’s influence in our take on the hero, with nods to other talented artists that have defined the character’s look over his long history. When Spider-Man comes to our stable of heroes, we’ll be marking his debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers.  The event is comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results.  And like the rest of our heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall crawler a reality.”

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The game invites players to live their Super Hero dreams. Outstanding storytelling and an ever-expanding universe come together in the definitive Avengers gaming experience. Master extraordinary abilities, customize a growing roster of Heroes, assemble into teams of up to four players, and defend the Earth from escalating threats.
