The synopsis for the game reads, “Set in the era of the Cold War, The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors that await by themselves or with fellow test subjects.”

While the news that a third game in the franchise is in the works has certainly sent fans through the roof with excitement, they will, unfortunately, have to temper their anticipation as the game is still currently in production.

Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time to focus on content creation, variety … and gore,Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf said in the announcement.

The first game, released in 2013 to rave reviews, saw players explore the demented psychiatric hospital Mount Massive Asylum as journalist Miles Upshur as he investigates how it became overrun by its homicidal patients and the mysterious experiments being conducted there. Thanks to the popularity of the first game and rave reviews, the publisher/developer began working on a sequel, which hit shelves in 2017.

The sequel followed journalist Blake Langermann as he and his wife are stranded in the Arizona desert while investigating the murder of a pregnant Jane Doe. The two are separated after their helicopter crashes and Blake must traverse the nearby village, which is inhabited by a dangerous sect looking to jumpstart the apocalypse. Though seen as a slight step down from its predecessor given its repetitive gameplay designs and perceived difficulty, it still received very positive reviews from critics and gamers alike.
