Disney Officially Announces Frozen Broadway and Holiday Special Plans

A Frozen Broadway show will open in 2018 with a TV special planned to air in 2017

Frozen fans are in for an exciting next few years. Rumored for some time, Disney officially announced today a Frozen Broadway show that will open in Spring 2018! That’s not all, either, as the Frozen Broadway debut will be preceded in 2017 by a new holiday television special planned to air on ABC next year! Those are in addition to the previously-announced Frozen 2, which is currently in the works.

The Frozen holiday special will be directed by Emmy Award-winning Prep & Landing directors Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton and produced by Oscar winner Roy Conli (Big Hero 6). Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad are all set to reprise their roles.

The Frozen Broadway show, meanwhile, will feature music and lyrics by creators of the film score Kristen Anderson-Lopez (In Transit, Up Here) and Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Up Here) and a book by Jennifer Lee (Wreck-It Ralph), the film’s screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck).

Golden Globe Award and Obie winner and two-time Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Here Lies Love, Mozart in the Jungle) is Frozen’s director and Tony-winner Peter Darling (Billy Elliot, Matilda) is choreographer.

The design team for the Frozen Broadway show includes scenic and costume design by seven-time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, The Coast of Utopia, An American in Paris), lighting design by five-time Tony Award winner Natasha KaK (Aladdin, An American in Paris, The Glass Menagerie) and sound design by four-time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski (The Scottsboro BoysMotown, After Midnight).

Two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, Wicked, The Book of Mormon) is music supervisor and creates vocal and incidental arrangements.

The Frozen Broadway show will join Disney hits Aladdin and The Lion King and will play its out-of-town tryout beginning in summer 2017 at a theatre to be announced. It is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher.
