Best Video Games Based on Comic Books

It’s almost that time of year again – Comic-Con. There’s nothing better than the feeling of walking around the show floor, taking in all of the excitement and checking out all the cool graphic novels, movies and, my personal favorite, video games.

Can’t wait? We’ve got you covered. To whet your appetite, we thought that you might like to check out this list of the top 10 video games based on comic books.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Yes, I know that the movie is absolutely terrible. Other than the opening scene, the movie has some of the worst tone issues depicted on screen. And for some reason the director thought Sabertooth’s power was that he could grow his nails at will… Yikes. But the game is awesome and it lets you live out all of your little-kid-who-wants-to-be-Wolverine fantasies.

Marvel Heroes: Like “Diablo”? Like comic books? Then have we got the game for you. This little MMO plays like an old-school hack-and-slash RPG with all of the flair and combat of a current-gen game. Plus, you can choose to play as a ton of different Marvel characters!

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions: The tie-in game for “Spider-Man 2” (the one with Tobey Maguire) was a mind-blowingly good game. It redefined the standards of licensed games, changed the “open world” landscape and ushered in a new era for video games based on comic books. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much innovation since then… Well, except for “Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.” The story, the gameplay and that hilarious Spider-Man wit are all there.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Another game that redefined a genre, this Batman adventure finally did what we were all hoping it would, it made Batman less like a brawler and more like “Splinter Cell.” Also, Rocksteady’s combat system was so innovative that it is still being used in numerous games today. In other words, this is a great game, not just a great game that’s based on a comic book.

The Walking Dead: The return of the point-and-click adventure is something that we’ve all been waiting for. Not since “Grim Fandango” has a game been so thought provoking and philosophically mind-bending. And while the graphics aren’t mesmerizing and the gameplay isn’t entirely fresh, great source material and incredible writing set this title apart from the rest.

TMNT: Turtles in Time: The 2D brawler is a lost art these days. With tons of 3D shooters and action games, it seems like the genre that most of us grew up playing is doomed to die a tragic death (if it hasn’t already). Luckily, we’ve already seen the best 2D brawler that will ever grace a screen and that is “Turtles in Time.” Couch co-op has never been so fun.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: The Marvel “Civil War” series was one of the best comic book arcs ever written. Pitting heroes against heroes over the politics of freedom… How could anything be better? Simple. Let the fans play it out for ourselves.

X-Men Arcade: We all played it. We all loved it. There’s absolutely no denying that when you threw on Wolverine’s special ability and tore up the entire screen, you were in absolute heaven.

DC Universe Online: One of the better MMO’s to have been released in the past few years, the customization system for DCUO is something that you could find yourself spending hours delving into… And that’s before you even started playing the game.

Injustice: Gods Among Us: I’ve got five words for you: You can play as Lobo… Enough Said.
