Mini-Review:
Before starting this review, I have to comment on the cover. Anyone else notice that Lee Adama is staring at Starbuck’s chest? Who approved this cover?
Despite being an abbreviated season, I think the series got on the right track again with Season 4.0. Sure, it was rocky at first. Everyone believing that Starbuck was insane in looking for Earth wore thin, especially over 3 to 4 episodes. Baltar turning into the leader of some bizarre cult also was quite weird. But new revelations about the ‘Final Five,’ the Cylon civil war, and other developments made things quite interesting. The final three episodes where Roslin is kidnapped, the hub is destroyed, and they finally head towards Earth were some of the most exciting of the series. The final episode, Revelations, did seem quite rushed and there was probably enough material in it to fill an entire season, but the last few minutes were worth ‘fast forwarding’ through the story. I believe that deciding to end the series with this season gave the writer’s focus and significantly helped the storytelling. The final revelation about Earth made me eager to see more when Season 4.5 kicks off.
Like the other BSG DVD’s, this one contains a lot of bonus features. They are all lighthearted, fun, and well worth checking out. Still, a lot of it seems redundant. A copy of the ‘Razor’ movie is included here, but if you’re a big fan then you already own it. And if you watched a lot of the online stuff, then all those bonus features won’t be new for you either. One of the first things I checked out was the “Caprica Sneak Peek.” It gives you a look at the prequel series and it looks quite good. And I have a feeling it may give a clue as to who the Twelfth Cylon may be. (My money is on either Apollo or Adama… most likely Adama.) The retrospectives on the series are fun to listen to (as well as footage from the San Diego Comic Con) and even the featurette on the known Cylons is cool to listen to. I think there’s enough to make this DVD set worth buying for BSG fans.
