Mini-Review:

Like many successful TV series, “Heroes” suffered from a sophomore slump. Things started out well enough. Hiro was stranded in the past and met his idol, Takezo Kensei. Peter, believed to be dead at the end of Season 1, mysteriously awakes with amnesia. Mohinder infiltrated ‘The Company’. It was a good setup.

But things eventually fell apart. New characters Alejandro and Maya were not that interesting and their scenes offered little more than repeated shots of Maya accidentally killing people with black goo coming from their eyes. Mohinder got a sort of Stockholm Syndrome and started making stupid choices that helped ‘The Company’. It didn’t help that he and Parkman had a bizarre “Three Men and a Little Lady” thing going on with Molly. Hiro’s ‘Excellent Adventure’ in the past ended up being a bit boring as he was detached from the adventures of the rest of the cast. In short, almost every storyline proved quite unsatisfying.

There were a few bright points. Kristen Bell was a promising addition to the cast as the bad girl daughter of one of the company baddies. Think of her as the anti-Claire. HRG had to suffer in silence at a printing store so Claire wouldn’t be taken. Speaking of Claire, she has a brief romance with another young ‘Hero’. Matt Parkman investigates the first generation of Heroes. Fun cameos by George Takei and others continue. Fortunately these high points make Season 2 worth checking out. And having seen the first episode of Season 3 at the San Diego Comic-Con, I’m more than happy to report the series gets back on track and Season 2 is forgiven – writers strike and all.

There’s a good selection of bonus features on the DVD. Besides the usual things like deleted scenes and commentaries, you’ll find some special goodies – most of them are inadvertently provided courtesy of the writers strike. There’s an alternate ending showing what would have happened if Peter had not caught the vial. We’re treated to some rather dull scenes showing Parkman and Nathan taking over the Odessa police department as people drop dead from the released virus. ‘Inside the Alternate Ending of “Generations”‘ explains the thinking behind it and how by having Peter catch the vial in the aired version, they eliminated several episodes of planned storyline. That’s also apparent in “Untold Stories.” I believe these are sequences that were filmed for future episodes that were cancelled because of the strike. We see Sylar kill some more Heroes for their powers, HRG convincing Elle that her father is using her as bait to lure out Sylar, and Hiro vowing to never use his time traveling powers again. But most notable is a horrific vision of the future from Angela Petrelli as she sees the Villains killing all of our favorite Heroes. Rounding out the bonus features are some NBC.com featurettes and two fake documentaries on Takezo Kensei and a character named Drucker.
