Synopsis:
The following is from the DVD cover:

“Take the field with a new lineup of scrappy sandlot sluggers! Starring Luke Perry as a pampered pro athlete who rediscovers his love for the game, ‘The Sandlot: Heading Home’ is a pulse-pounding and heartwarming tale about losing your ego, putting your friends first…and winning it all!

Major league baseball superstar Tommy Santorelli (Perry) racks up great numbers at the plate, but his “me-first” attitude drags his team down. But Tommy gets a second chance when he’s knocked unconscious by a pitch and wakes up as a 12-year-old on his childhood playing field…the sandlot! Now, with a greedy developer, Earl Needman, threatening to bulldoze the sandlot unless Tommy’s ragtag friends can beat Needman’s much-better team, Tommy must decide whether to put his own interests first by switching teams…or stay true to his friends by leading them to their greatest victory yet!”

“The Sandlot: Heading Home” is rated PG for language and some rude humor

The Movie:
“The Sandlot” returns for a third inning and man, it’s monumentally bad. Everything that made the first film fun and charming is gone from this latest version. Instead we have a bizarre time travel movie about a baseball player. Tommy Santorelli is first introduced as an adult jerk baseball player, then when he goes back in time to the ’70s, he’s a jerk kid. He spends much of the film either being cocky or spouting phrases or comments from the future. It gets old fast. It doesn’t help matters that the rest of the cast is a bunch of overacting stereotypes. The final result is a film that’s bad even for a TV movie. I’m sure some kids out there will find it entertaining for a little while, but their parents will definitely be heading for the hills. I could barely stand to watch this one.

The Extras:
For such a terrible straight-to-video film, this DVD has a lot of bonus features. You’ll find your usual offerings of storyboard galleries, bloopers, and deleted scenes. Also included is a video diary from the director and some video from the two lead actors clowning around on set. Rounding things out is “For the Love of the Game: Sharing Memories with “Goose” Gossage”. In it, a kid interviews Gossage and asks a bunch of baseball questions. Rounding things out are DVD ROM games “Cal Ripken’s Play Baseball Instructional Demo” and “Backyard Sports Game Demo”.

The Bottom Line:
Take a pass on “The Sandlot: Heading Home” and go back and watch the first film instead.
