Mini-Review:
I really enjoyed the “Stargate” movie and I even read a few of the spinoff books. However, for one reason or another, I’ve never seen a single episode of the long running TV series or this spinoff from it. I was curious to see if someone could dive into the middle of a second season and follow what was going on. The result was that it was only partially successful in hooking me.

I was quite impressed with the special effects on the show. The city of Atlantis and the spaceships looked fantastic. They were some of the best effects I’ve seen on TV. The story was also fast paced and the action kept things moving. That being said, I don’t think the point where I jumped on was the best place to join the storyline. I knew nothing about the characters nor cared about them when they were placed in jeopardy. There was also very little related to the “Stargate” movie. It has about as much in common with the film as “Frasier” does with “Cheers.” I also found the acting to be a little bland. There are no real standouts among the cast.

In short, if you want to jump aboard the “Stargate” TV series bandwagon, go back to the very beginning. The series should satisfy fans of sci-fi television, but it’s not quite up to the quality of “Battlestar Galactica.”

Fans of “Stargate Atlantis” should be very pleased with all the bonus features on this DVD set. There are a ton of featurettes focusing on the making of specific episodes. There are also commentaries and photo galleries. The final result is one of the better bonus feature offerings of a TV series DVD set.
