This Week on Blu-ray and DVD: January 6, 2015

Welcome to ComingSoon.net’s look at all the major releases hitting this week on Blu-ray and DVD! After a slow two weeks for the holiday season, 2015 starts with a bang, delivering all sorts of great new releases, TV season sets and catalogue titles.

Already receiving a copious amount of Oscar buzz, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, shot over the course of 12 years, is the first of several recent big screen hits. Also in that category is Get on Up, the Tate Taylor (The Help)-helmed biopic of “Godfather of Soul” James Brown, starring Chadwick Boseman (who is already set to take the title role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Panther).

Four recent theatrical thrillers also hit today, including the home invasion tale No Good Deed, starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, Alexandre Aja’s Horns, starring Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe, the religiously-tinged end-of-the-world thriller Left Behind, headlined by Nicolas Cage, and, finally, The Guest, a lightly tongue-in-cheek John Carpenter-esque film starring Dan Stevens and hailing from the You’re Next team of director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett.

As for older genre fare, Scream Factory today delivers a special edition of 1995’s horror sequel Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, an early work from Academy Award winning director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls).

The Criterion Collection, meanwhile, updates Kihachi Okamoto’s 1966 Samurai tale Sword of Doom with a brand new high-definition digital restoration.

On the television front, HBO is delivering both the third season of Lena Dunham’s hit series Girls (which just got renewed for a fifth season) and the first season of the recently-debuted Looking. Another recent debut, the Michael Bay-produced pirate series Black Sails, also arrives on Blu-ray and DVD, as does the fifth season of FX’s hilarious animated spy series Archer (retitled, for this season only, “Archer: Vice”).
