Freddy vs. Jason Tops the DVD Charts

New Line Home Entertainment’s Freddy vs. Jason was the best-selling DVD and VHS release for the week ending Januarny 18. The film earned an estimated $8.81 million in gross rental revenue during its debut week in release, making it the fifth-best-renting video for that same week.

But the real standout for the week was HBO Home Video’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, which debuted at number 12 on VideoScan’s First Alert DVD sales chart, making it the first off-network comedy show to make it into the top 20 best-selling DVDs during its first week in release.

Meanwhile, the top video rental during the same frame was Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment’s Underworld, which earned an estimated $11.27 million in weekly rental nationwide for a 12-day cume of $23.7 million. It dipped from the nation’s best-selling DVD during its debut week in stores to second place.

Columbia’s S.W.A.T. was the nation’s number 2 choice in the video rental category last week, earning an estimated $11.25 million in weekly rental revenue for a 19-day gross rental cume of $43.9 million.

American Wedding continues to show strong sales and rental legs after 16 days in release, with the latest installment in the comedic series slipping slightly from fourth to fifth. It was the nation’s fourth-best-renting video last week, earning an estimated $9.37 million for a 16-day total of $31.3 million in gross rental revenue.
