North Country Has Slow Start on DVD

A pair of high-profile Oscar nominations couldn’t help lift North Country to the top of the latest DVD sales chart, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film, up for best actress (Charlize Theron) and supporting actress (Frances McDormand) honors, debuted at a lowly No. 6 on VideoScan’s First Alert chart for the week ending February 26.

Two other new DVD releases, the box office duds Rent and Domino, took the two top spots on the preliminary national sales chart, while incumbent champ Saw II slipped to No. 3.

Also beating North Country in DVD sales was a direct-to-video feature, Ultimate Avengers: The Movie, at No. 4, and the first-season of Grey’s Anatomy, at No. 5. The Weather Man bowed at No. 8.

North Country did manage to snag the top spot on trade publication Home Media Retailing’s video rental chart for the week, earning an estimated $7.8 million, or nearly 43% of its $18.3 million box-office gross.

The Weather Man debuted at No. 2 with estimated rental earnings of $7.2 million, or more than half its $12.5 theatrical tally.

Domino bowed at No. 4, and Rent at No. 7. Saw II, the previous week’s top renter, remained in high demand at No. 3. After two weeks, the hit horror sequel has earned more than $16 million at rental stores.
