David Beckham Discloses Beckham Documentary Helped Him ‘Get Over’ Manchester United Exit

Last year, Netflix released a docuseries titled BECKHAM, which showcased David Beckham’s journey from his early life to becoming a soccer icon. Throughout his career, Beckham has represented teams such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and PSG. He has also won trophies such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, Supercopa de España, and more.

BECKHAM was recently screened during a Los Angeles For Your Consideration Event. The former football player was joined by its director (Fisher Stevens), producer (John Battsek), and editor (Michael Harte). Here, Beckham revealed that the project served as therapy for him. He stated that in the docuseries, he could open up about several topics that he couldn’t before.

The retired footballer said that he saw many ups and downs during his 22-year-long professional career in the sport. He went through several challenges and admitted that it was “difficult.” Per People Magazine, he said, “I had a career that lasted 22 years. And I’ve gone through a lot of years, and I always spoke about my career and my life. You know, it was like a roller coaster. More ups and downs, but in all honesty, it was difficult at times.”

Beckham added that the documentary didn’t particularly act as “closure.” Still, he felt better about certain painful moments in his career, including leaving Manchester United or receiving a red card during a FIFA match. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, when England faced Argentina, Beckham kicked Diego Simeone, which resulted in his elimination from the match. Eventually, England lost the game in a penalty shootout. According to his wife, Victoria Beckham, this incident reportedly left him broken and “clinically depressed.”

Netflix’s BECKHAM documentary made David Beckham ‘feel better’ about certain moments

People Magazine reported that during the For Your Consideration panel discussion, David Beckham thanked the team behind the documentary for making him feel better about the roadblocks in his career. He said, “It did make me feel better, and that’s why I have to thank these guys.”

The Inter Miami co-owner then revealed the reason for his participation in the project. Firstly, he stated that he found it hard to talk about it because every time he did, he became “emotional.” He revealed that BECKHAM made him realize how his life and actions negatively impacted his family in public. He was previously unaware of what his parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends went through. Only after watching the documentary that he understood the gravity of the situation.

Beckham shared, “The reason I wanted to do the documentary is because I wanted something for my family to have all in one place to celebrate. Because my parents, my grandparents, sisters and my friends have been through that, and I hadn’t realized how it is it affected them all until I saw the documentary.” He continued, “So that for me, you know, made me feel better in a weird way that they could actually talk about it as well.”

How did David Beckham’s mother react to the documentary?

Panel attendees also learned that Beckham’s mother and youngest son had wholesome reactions to the documentary, reported People Magazine. The former footballer revealed that after watching the Netflix docuseries, his mother, Sandra, approached him and told him not to feel bad. These words made him “emotional.”

Meanwhile, his son Cruz shared that he was unaware of his father’s soccer skills and achievements. He said, “On the way home, my youngest son Cruz turned around to me [and said], ‘Dad, I didn’t realize you were really good?'”

David Beckham currently co-owns Inter Miami CF and Salford City. His professional playing career began in the early 90s and concluded with his retirement in 2013. Soccer fans often consider him one of the greatest players of all time due to his exceptional passing, crossing, and ability to take eye-pleasing free-kicks. Throughout his career, he has won 19 major trophies and is the first English player to win league titles in four different countries. He won England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Ligue 1, and the USA’s MLS Cup.

On the personal front, he is married Victoria Beckham. Together, the couple has four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.
