On November 8, 2010, a woman named Jennifer Pan called 911 to report a shooting incident at her parents’ home. She told the dispatcher that unknown assailants stormed inside her house and shot her parents. Reports suggested that the gunmen fled the scene after the incident. At first, it looked like a simple case of robbery gone wrong. However, as the investigations began, the authorities found that Pan and her alleged boyfriend, Daniel Wong, were responsible for the crime. The entire case is featured in the Netflix documentary What Jennifer Did.

Jennifer Pan and Daniel Wong met in high school and soon started dating. However, their relationship strained after Pan’s parents learned about her lies. As per The Sun, Pan lied to her parents about her academic life and even showed them a fake diploma. When her parents found out the truth, they decided not to let Pan meet her boyfriend. Subsequently, Pan and Wong started formulating a plan to murder her parents so that she could get her share of the estate, reported People Magazine.

On the night of the murder, Jennifer Pan’s accomplices entered her house and shot her parents. According to The Sun, Pan’s mother died on the spot, while her father endured severe injuries. He went into a coma, and after regaining consciousness, Pan’s father recounted the events to authorities. As a result, police interrogated her multiple times, and eventually, she admitted that she hired multiple men to murder her. After authorities apprehended her, they also arrested Daniel Wong in the case by 2011.

The trial concluded with Daniel Wong and Jennifer Pan sentenced to life in prison. Citing Wong’s friend, People Magazine reported that he is currently residing at a correctional facility in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.

Will there be a new trial in Jennifer Pan’s murder-for-hire case?

In 2023, the court gave all the perpetrators a chance to file an appeal for their first-degree murder charges. According to CBC, the court announced that the judge in the initial trial didn’t give the jury a chance to know about all the options. Subsequently, the judge deemed the conviction unsafe.

No new trial date has been announced as of yet. However, People Magazine reported that if Jennifer Pan, Daniel Wong, and other accomplices didn’t get a new trial, they would be eligible for parole after 25 years.
