Eminem’s Stans Documentary: When Did the American Rapper’s Hit Song ‘Stan’ Come Out?

Released in 2000, Eminem’s hit song “Stan” was the third single from his album The Marshall Mathers LP. With that song, the term ‘stan’ became a popular word that was used to refer to the rapper’s passionate fans. Eminem is co-producing a documentary titled Stans, which will follow him and his fans through his journey to fame. The documentary will be produced in association with DIGA Studios and Hill District Media. Paramount/MTV will take over initial distribution.

According to The Guardian, Eminem’s “Stan” was unlike most mainstream hit songs in the story it chose to tell. It follows the story of Stanley Mitchell, who claims to be Eminem’s biggest fan. “Stan” is one of the rapper’s most detailed, emotion-packed works. With the advent of social media, it reportedly gave a face to the rising toxic fan culture that would only accelerate in the decades after the release of “Stan.”

After the release of the song, the word ‘stan’ became popular as an internet slang. It is now used for anyone siding with a certain celebrity or popular artist. Despite it not being the most common Eminem song to be played in public or to be known widely, the song’s storytelling excels in the genre that it comes from. As such, it remains one of the most brilliant songs by the singer and rapper.

The Marshall Mathers LP also consisted of some other Eminem songs that became a pop culture phenomenon, impacting the music industry in unprecedented ways. Notably, “The Real Slim Shady,” which is the eighth song in the album, rose to become one of the most famous songs ever.

As per Spotify, Eminem’s 2002 song “Lose Yourself” is generally considered the rapper’s most popular and most listened-to song. It was released as part of the soundtrack of 8-Mile. The song was released on October 28, 2002. “Lose Yourself” expresses what B-Rabbit, Eminem’s character, was going through on his journey to become one of America’s most popular rappers. It was the No.1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks consecutively.

When The Real Sim Shady was released as part of The Marshall Mathers LP album, it became his biggest him up to that point. It also won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. It then took Eminem to new heights of success after his first album, Infinite, came out in November 1996. Infinite did not rank on national charts and sold around 1000 copies. This reportedly motivated him to enhance his style to break into mainstream music.

Following this, his second studio album, The Slim Shady LP, was released in 1999. It is considered his first major record label, debuting at No. 2 on Billboard 200. Moreover, it marked the rise of Eminem’s alter-ego, Slim Shady, who many believe rose after the commercial failure of Infinite.

Years later, Eminem is moving into a new year with the documentary “Stans.” It will reportedly explore the culture of super fandom and its repercussions through the perspective of Eminem.
