John Gotti: How Long Was He in Prison & How Did He Die?

In April 1992, the federal court convicted the infamous mob boss John Gotti for five murders, including the murders of Paul Castellano and his right-hand man, Thomas Bilotti. The 52-year-old mafioso was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, obstruction of justice, tax evasion, illegal gambling, extortion, and loansharking.

Not only did the court sentence him to life imprisonment but they also ordered him to pay a fine of $250,000. However, his punishment did not involve the possibility of parole.

John Gotti eventually passed away in prison on June 10, 2002. He was serving time in the United States Penitentiary, Marion. Due to his illness, he was in the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. Gotti was suffering from throat cancer, which eventually became the cause of his death. He died at the age of 62.

Although Gotti’s childhood was rough, during his reign, he became a prominent public figure in New York. He was known for his flamboyant dressing habits and charismatic personality. As a crime boss, his yearly income was between $5-$20 million a year.

Netflix’s Get Gotti will tell the story of John Gotti from various perspectives. The docuseries will further detail how the mafia boss was apprehended. According to Netflix, the synopsis of Get Gotti reads, “Told from both sides of the law this documentary series from the makers of ‘Fear City’ follows the FBI’s battle to bring down infamous mob boss John Gotti.”

The docuseries’ executive producers are Dimitri Doganis and Sam Starbuck. It was released on October 24, 2023.
