Black Butler: Public School Arc episode 1 recap

Black Butler season 4 commenced the much-awaited Public School Arc. The first episode begins with Ciel Phantomhive standing before Weston College, England’s most posh and prestigious institution. Gradually, viewers learn that Weston has strict rules and disciplinary guidelines that every student must abide by.

When Ciel steps on the college lawn, he is suddenly met with curious eyes. Later, McMillan informs him that only the four prefects of the college, called the “P4,” can step on the lawn. Ciel then meets the four prefects, who carry a mysterious and intriguing air.

Later, the episode reveals that the four prefects represent the four houses of the college, each characterized by specific niches. The episode also shows the peculiarities of the college when Ciel is asked to polish the prefects’ shoes and is given an odd welcome party. Soon after, Sebastian, Ciel’s demon butler and the housemaster for Sapphire Owl, is introduced.

Subsequently, Ciel meets Johann Agares, the Lower Master of the college, who tells him that the Headmaster decides everything at the college. The Lower Master asks Ciel to follow all the college’s rules, regulations, and guidelines. He also asks him to sign, promising the same.

When the prefects were about to leave, Ciel asked them how he could meet the Headmaster. However, to Ciel’s disappointment, the prefects informed him that the Headmaster does not meet with ordinary students and that only the prefects can meet him.

Later, McMillan, who had become Ciel’s informant, tells Ciel about Drudges. These Drudges, certain chosen juniors, are almost like butlers for the seniors. They do their seniors’ tasks after breakfast. Additionally, the four prefects have Drudges, and they have special allowances that ordinary students don’t have.

By asking about Derrick, Ciel understands that the houses are competitive and that students can’t talk about pupils from other houses, so much so that he cannot even go to different houses’ grounds without being ridiculed. Clayton then asks Ciel to clean the dining hall after breakfast, for which Sebastian comes to the rescue.

In the final moments of the episode, Ciel reads a letter from the queen stating that Duke Clemens’ son, Derrick, has stopped contacting his family, raising concern for them. Moreover, other students, too, had done the same and did not return home. Hence, Ciel readily takes up the case, explaining his arrival at Weston College.
