Anime Like Attack on Titan: Vinland Saga, Code Geass & More

The riveting series Attack on Titan recently ended and, naturally, fans can’t get enough of the Isekai world when it comes to anime. Hence, ComingSoon has curated a list of four best anime like Attack on Titan for viewers who wish to keep exploring the human psyche and matters of existentialism.

Vinland Saga (July 8, 2019 to Dec 30, 2019)

Vinland Saga is one of the anime that touches upon similar complex psychological themes like that in Attack on Titan. This seinen anime has gory and historical themes as it encompasses heart-throbbing action and takes viewers on an adventure along with Thorfinn, the protagonist. Thorfinn dreams of a life that is free from conflict, but given life’s complications, he grows up to become a mercenary.

His lifestyle contradicts his dreams and his father’s preachings to never harm anyone. But, he is helpless as he finds himself fully involved in the brutality of war as a Viking mercenary. At the same time, he aims at avenging his father’s murder by assassinating Askeladd. Vinland Saga explores the complexities of life and ideals, similar to that in Attack on Titan.

Code Geass (Oct 6, 2006 to July 29, 2007)

Spanning over 25 episodes, Code Geass manages to capture fans’ attention worldwide with its riveting mecha theme. As such, this award-winning action television series follows the story of Lelouch Lamperouge. Lelouch is a Britannian student who wields Geass, the power of kings.

Amidst the chaos in the Holy Empire of Britannia, wherein a military force reigns over Japan, Lelouch rebels against Britannia to seek revenge as he disguises himself as Zero, a formidable vigilante. Code Geass, being an anime like Attack on Titan, also gained similar recognition worldwide. Its multi-genre touch appeals to the fans so much that they still praise the title whenever they get the chance to do so. It’s available to stream on Crunchyroll.

Death Note (Oct 4, 2006 to June 27, 2007)

Death Note has a total of 37 captivating episodes, with a narrative that touches upon themes of suspense, supernatural powers, and psychological thriller. It has two central characters, Light Yagami and Detective L Lawliet. Light, a bright student of just 17 years of age, finds a mysterious notebook in his school playground. The notebook, “Death Note”, as it is famously known, belongs to the God of Death, Ryuk.

The Death Note becomes a powerful weapon for Light to punish criminals that walk the Earth. Hence, initially killing criminals, he soon starts to kill anyone who meddles with his mission. However, an enigmatic detective, L, strives to unveil the mystery behind the sudden deaths of criminals. As the two masterminds engage in a conflicting battle, they race against time to establish their victory over one another.

Overlord

Within just 13 episodes, Overlord is another Isekai anime like Attack on Titan, which manages to captivate viewers with its complex storytelling. The anime television series adapts Kugane Marutama and So-bin’s light novel volumes 1 to 3. It centers on a virtual reality game Yggdrasil and a powerful wizard of Ainz Ooal Gown, Momonga.

The game, in its final hour, is about to shut down. But, Momonga decides to stay online and remains completely aware past midnight. Moreover, the non-player characters within the game suddenly start to interact and showcase individuality. This peculiarity confuses Momonga, but he decides to play along and reign over this anomalous world. As such, he commands his loyal servants to explore and dominate the world as he tries to understand the cause behind this strange transformation within the game.
