Anime Like Toradora: Horimiya, Clannad & More

Toradora managed to enchant audiences with its heartfelt narrative and comedic elements. For those who were touched by the title, here are four of the best anime like Toradora that explore similar thematic elements and plot complexities.

Horimiya (Jan 10, 2021 to Apr 4, 2021)

One of the titles that reflect Toradora’s essence is Horimiya, a shonen anime television series with just 13 episodes. It is a romantic drama that revolves around Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura. Though they seem to be quite incompatible at first, they shock everyone by establishing a building connection between them.

Hori’s beauty is publicly acknowledged, but her social life remains in shambles due to the evil burdens of housework. Somehow she encounters Miyamura, whose meek personality hides a bohemian character with tattoos and piercings. Upon their fortunate encounter, they reveal their hidden lives to each other and spend most of their time together. As their connection deepens, they unveil unexpected aspects of their existence, adding emotional depth to the narrative.

Clannad (Oct 5, 2007 to Mar 28, 2008)

Adapted from a visual novel, Clannad aired 23 episodes in Fall, 2007. Along with romance and drama, it deals with supernatural themes. Encompassing the riveting journey of Tomoya Okazaki, Clannad features his disoriented life. He leads a delinquent lifestyle, that is until he meets Nagisa Furukawa.

They befriend each other and find out about each other’s lives. Tomoya understands Nagisa’s dream to revive the high school’s drama club as she battles with a difficult illness. Consequently, he helps Nagisa realize her dream by joining forces with four other girls. As he does so, life starts making sense to him as he realizes its beauty, diversity, and richness.

Kimi ni Todoke (Oct 7, 2009 to Mar 31, 2010)

Kimi ni Todoke spans over 25 episodes and is a shoujo anime series. Being an anime television adaptation like Toradora, the title encompasses drama and romance. In the narrative, drama surrounds Sawako Kuronuma’s character, who, despite being very gentle, is considered frightening like The Ring’s Sadako. Hence, people around her misjudge her and refer to her as “Sadako”.

The protagonist aims at nothing but a normal life with normal friends. She also comes to develop a liking for Shouta Kazehaya, who is a typically popular boy in the class. Being friendly towards Sawako, he urges her to join a class test of courage. Moving forward, Sawako learns that her interactions with Kazehaya positively impact her. However, little does she know that Kazehaya feels the very same way about her.

Plastic Memories (Apr 5, 2015 to Jun 28, 2015)

A sci-fi romantic drama, Plastic Memories is a gripping original anime television series with 13 episodes. It features an 18-year-old Tsukasa Mizugaki, who, unfortunately, fails a college entrance exam. Despite this failure, he manages to get a job at Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. The corporation is responsible for devising Giftias, which are advanced androids that look like humans. These Giftias can only live for 81,920 hours.

Tsukasa forms an alliance with Isla, a skilled Giftia. Gradually, Tsukasa develops feelings for Isla as he grapples with his new role at the corporation. The narrative focuses on his internal struggles and how he manages to fight his feelings whilst knowing that his time with Isla won’t last forever.
