Naruto Shippuden: What is Edo Tensei Jutsu?

In the world of Naruto, a forbidden Jutsu is considered catastrophic. It can inflict significant harm on the user, or it might be inhumanely damaging to others. Not only that, but any Jutsu, the fundamental laws of nature, also fall under this category. One such technique is the Edo Tensei, which is used to bring dead people back to life. As intriguing as this technique might be, there are certain drawbacks as well.

During the Fourth Great Shinobi War, one of the most crucial Jutsu that changed the entire course of the battle was Edo Tensei. The alliance power of Shinobi from all five nations had to get on their knees in front of the sheer power of this Jutsu.

Edo Tensei is a summoning Jutsu that can be used to reincarnate dead people back to the real world. This technique connects the soul of the dead to a living vessel. The second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, created this. This technique intrigued Orochimaru incredibly, and he wanted to improve it to suit his needs. However, what he couldn’t do was done by his subordinate Kabuto Yakushi; he nearly perfected it.

Using this technique, an individual who is resurrected can employ all the Jutsu in their arsenal. Not only this, but they can also use their Kekkei Genkai and Kekkei Touta. This was seen in the series when the resurrected Uchiha could use their Sharingan, and the 2nd Tsuchikage could use Dust Release.

Naturally, some individuals have more Chakra than others. Under normal conditions, a Shinobi can run out of their Chakra reserve. However, the dead resurrected using this technique would have unlimited Chakra. For this technique to work correctly, the user must have access to a living sacrifice and DNA samples of the individual they want to resurrect. This is one of the most crucial parameters for Edo Tensei.

We have seen that the most powerful Jutsu in Naruto are bound to inflict significant damage on the user.

For example, Izanagi has the power to rewrite reality itself. It breaks every law of nature and is the most potent ability of the Sharingan. However, the user loses the light of their eyes once they use this technique. Another example is the Rasenshuriken. It can damage Naruto’s enemies on a cellular level. However, it affects Naruto too, because if he uses it too much, the nerves in his arm will be fried.

Surprisingly, Edo Tensei’s risk-to-reward ratio isn’t that wild. When Kabuto was explaining this to Obito, he specifically mentioned that this is a summoning technique and doesn’t inflict damage on the caster. But rather than summoning a giant toad, you summon the soul of the dead instead.

This technique can be used to resurrect as many dead individuals as the user wants. The greatest part is that there won’t be any drawbacks for the caster. This Jutsu’s abilities are astonishing, and it is risk-free for the user, which makes this forbidden Jutsu quite dangerous compared to others.
