Clive Barker Contributed Paintings to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Set Design

If you thought the set design in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a terrifying, that may have to do with horror maestro Clive Barker lending his, ah, master stroke to the proceedings.

During a recent set visit, production designer Lisa Soper revealed to i09 that the famous horror director had contributed over 150 paintings to cover the walls of Greendale’s bewitching academy. Soper explained she befriended Barker, the director behind the iconic Hellraiser, through Sabrina, and spoke about the show’s set design, because what else are you going to talk to him about?

“We spoke about kind of the idea and the themes behind what we were doing here and he said, ‘Why don’t you come down, spend the weekend, take a look through all the artwork and pick out what you want?’” Soper said.

While Barker is most famous for his films, he also is an accomplished horror writer, having written Books of Blood and the Arabat series, and an acclaimed artist. He is obviously quite gracious as well, as he contributed a large collection of paintings for Sabrina’s production team to use.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on the comic book of the same name, which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Kiernan Shipka stars as Sabrina in the new series and is joined by Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) as Hilda Spellman, Miranda Otto (Annabelle: Creation) as Zelda Spellman, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who) as Mary Wardell, Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood, Tati Gabrielle as Prudence, Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle and Bronson Pinchot in the cast.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) is writing the adaptation (the comic book basis for which he also wrote) and will executive produce. Lee Toland Krieger will direct and executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. The drama hails from the Warner Bros. Television-based Berlanti Productions.

The series will premiere on Netflix on October 26.
