Swan Lake Film Starring Felicity Jones Heads to Universal

A new Swan Lake film, sans actual ballet, starring Felicity Jones is heading to Universal

Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is attached to star in a new Swan Lake film, based on the 1877 ballet by Tchaikovsky, which is heading to Universal Pictures, according to Variety. The Swan Lake film will be directed by Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash) from a script from Kristina Lauren Anderson.

Swan Lake was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from 1875-1876. The ballet premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Swan Lake was famously featured the 2010 film Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. It’s the story of Odette, a young woman who was transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer. The curse can only be broken if someone who has never loved before swears to love Odette for all time. Prince Siegfried sees her and offers to kill the sorcerer, but he cannot die or the curse can never be broken. The daughter of the sorcerer, Odile (played by the same ballerina) is brought to the castle and Siegfried proposes, thinking it’s Odette. Things don’t end well for the couple, as you may recall from the Swan Lake scene in Black Swan.

Jones recently starred as Jyn Erso, who lead the group of Rebels that stole the Death Star plans in Rogue On: A Star Wars Story. She’s also known for her work in The Theory of Everything, for which she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She’s also known for films like The Tempest, with Helen Mirren and Russell Brand, Inferno and A Monster Calls.

Kristina Lauren Anderson wrote the script Catherine the Great, which hit the top of the Black List in 2014. She is currently writing the series Mrs. Hemingway for Amazon Studios.
