Marvel Movies Masters: Ranking All 12 MCU Directors

Since Marvel Studios began releasing movies back in 2008, they’ve always made fascinating choices when it comes to who sits in the director’s chair. With Spider-Man: Homecoming swinging into theaters on July 7, we thought we’d take the opportunity to rank the, to date, 12 directors who have made the Marvel movies that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jon Watts is the newest addition to the MCU director roster, yet he manages to best previous Spider-Man directors Sam Raimi and Marc Webb in terms of taking the character from the comics page and making him feel both true to form and utterly contemporary. While he may not be as famous as other MCU heavy-hitters like Joss Whedon or James Gunn, we have a feeling a lot of fans are going to sit up and take notice once they get to see Homecoming.

Watts falls under the same umbrella as many other director choices that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has made over the years, namely a relative unknown with a small filmography who has a great handle on story and character, bringing a fresh sensibility you don’t get from more established Hollywood filmmakers. Upcoming MCU helmers Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Captain Marvel) all fit this mold as well.
